Inspo & Ideas from RHS Hampton Court 2024

Inspo & ideas from RHS Hampton Court 2024. A Garden Festival in an iconic setting with plenty of places to rest your feet and soak up the atmosphere.

Walking from the station to the show takes you not just past the Hampton Court Palace, but through the golden gates into the restored Privy Garden. Although this is only one of the public entrances, I feel it is the most impressive. From the Privy Garden, visitors are directed through to the Great Fountain Garden. Walking between the avenues of Yew trees trained in the fashionable shape of a goosefoot, the Palace behind and the promise of RHS Hampton Court Garden Festival ahead is a delight. And, I might add, much  less stressful than dodging the golf balls on the route to the exhibitors entrance!

RHS Hampton Court 2024 – The Plews View

What I’d like to do here is to give you a personal, Plews view, of some of the gardens and planting, nursery and trade stands that caught our eyes. A largely pictorial blog, With ideas to inspire you for your own garden.

How this article is set out: Firstly all the gardens and features are listed in in alphabetical in their categories for a quick reference for you. Then each category has a gallery of photos. And I’ve thrown in some interesting  facts about the show too.

RHS Hampton Court 2024 – the Gardens List

It’s good to see so many smaller gardens as I sometimes think these are easier for many people to relate to and take away ideas  from. Sometimes we can be overwhelmed by the sheer wow factor of the larger show gardens. Although having said that, it’s possible to walk through  many of them, so you can get up close and be inspired.

Not all of the gardens in detail but the bits that especially stood out for us and I feel might inspire you for your own garden.

Resilience was a key theme running through the gardens large and small. Sustainable planting, permeable surfaces, recycling of materials all played a part.

Fun Facts about Hampton Court Show

The first Hampton Court show was held in 1990 – but it wasn’t RHS. The flower show was organised by Historic Royal Palaces (HRP) and Network Southeast. Hampton Court Palace is run by HRP. For the very first Hampton Court Show, Network Southeast laid on special trains from Waterloo and the railway porters wore carnations in their hats. (I remember that!)

But Network Southeast only supported the show until 1992. The successor was of course – the RHS. Which means that the first RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show was held in 1993. (Which is why 2023 was the 30th Anniversary)

A further change happened in 2019 with a renaming. Previously it had been the RHS Hampton Court Flower Show but it became the RHS Hampton Court Garden Festival.

Garden Festival rather than Flower Show helps to differentiate Hampton Court from the Royal Horticultural Society’s other large London show at Chelsea. But more to the point it incorporates the different ethos and atmosphere. Not only is there room for the gardens themselves to spread out but it enables them to offer the opportunity to walk through them. It does make a huge difference to the visitors’ experience when you can get up close.

Roses, roses and more roses! The Festival of Roses marquee makes the most of the fact that one of the nations’ favourite flowers is at its blooming peak in early July.

And talking of flowers – more flowers are sold per square mile at the show than anywhere else in the UK.

The show will be at Hampton Court in 2025, then 2027 and every other year after that.
