Planting Design

A Planting Design is where we look at your current or non-existent planting and borders. We then design a planting scheme that suits your preferences, needs and budget.

As part of the Planting design, we will look at: –

  • The health of any existing planting which you would like to retain and advise whether it is worth keeping
  • The soil condition and suitability for the type of plants you would like
  • Your needs and budget
  • Styles of planting – formal and informal; English Cottage Garden, Mediterranean and so on

This service, like the full garden design service, starts with a brief questionnaire and an Initial Design Visit.

The different types of Planting Design service we offer at Plews are: –

1. Design and Planting  – We create a planting design scheme, purchase the flowers, shrubs, herbs and fruit trees for you and plant them for you. As well as a planting plan and plant maintenance notes, we also provide a value added services including a ‘plant health check’ at approximately three months after planting.

2. Design with Planting and Gardening Lesson – For those who would like to get to learn more about the new plants in their garden. As the lessons are bespoke, the content will be suitable for the plants and for you.  Often requested as a short gardening course along with pruning and general  care lessons by clients who have had garden designs and planting designs from Plews. It can also be a stand alone session. For those who would like to really get involved in the replanting of their garden, we offer a longer Planting Design and Maintenance Gardening Course.

3. Design Only – A planting design by Plews, where we produce a design concept, planting lists and planting plan; suggest sources for purchase (online and local to you); border preparation instructions and plant maintenance notes for keeping your plants healthy in the long term. This, along with email and phone support, enables those who would like to get their hands dirty to do so. An option for gardeners who are skilled but feel they need advice in making their garden planting schemes cohesive and sparkling.

4. Design at a Distance – Similar to Design only, however with enhanced input at your end and where we instruct you how to carry out soil tests, etc. An Initial Design Visit is optional.

A Planting Design is suitable for: –

  • Gardens where there will be no change to the main structure of the garden
  • Replanting an existing area of flower borders
  • Creating a vegetable patch
  • Designing a herb garden
  • Creating a Mini orchard
  • Front gardens
  • Courtyard Gardens
  • Patio planting
  • Roof Gardens and Balconies
  • Appropriate for both large and small spaces
  • A way to optimise the positioning of plants in your garden

Small amounts of landscaping work are able to be included where they are integral to the planting design. The obvious elements would be raised beds, perhaps for a vegetable garden. Or a bespoke bin store with small green roof and planting scheme as part of the overall planting design in a front garden.
