Pollination

Pollination is the process by which pollen is transferred by a variety of different means, in order to fertilise plants.

In the case of flowering plants it is usually carried out by pollinating insects such as bees, hoverflies, butterflies and moths.

However some plants are wind pollinated, for example, Salix, Willow species of tree.

Pollination is also carried out by hand to develop new plant hybrids, or as a more reliable means of pollination for rare plants.
