Organic Matter

Organic matter (OM) is the dead and rotting matter from plants, animals and waste food. It is used as another term for compost, but they are not exactly the same. Strictly speaking, compost is decomposed and rotted down organic matter.

Organic matter provides nutrients and structure when incorporated into the soil as either a top-dressing, also know as mulch, or dug into the soil.
